Brand New Year

Happy New Year, and yes, it’s snowing again.

Busy weekend, with Nancy, Doug and their blind schnauzer, Socrates arriving on the Friday, and Laura, John and their shelty, Colby on the Saturday, which translates to the dogs outnumbering the humans when it comes to paws and getting into mischief. Still, fun, FUN, fun.

Just before leaving to head home to Markham, Uncle Doug showed off his new Canon camera by taking some amateur shots with his telescoping lense of the piliated woodpecker, who had dropped by especially for this occasion (H’okay, we bribed him with fresh suet).
This camera certainly takes the amateur out of amateur photography though, with the quality of the actual footage. Really, the only thing possibly left to chance is placement of the subject.

Laura, John and the puppy pulled out yesterday. Yeah, a couple of days early, but Laura feels that they need at least a few moments for themselves, and who can blame them. The Holidays can be a stressful period, yesirree.

Before they left though, a long distance call came through from aunt Nancy, letting us know that Doug had had a mild heart attack en route home Sunday.
He’s okay, although the doctors were keeping him for a few days observation at Scarborough-Stouffville Hospital, but this may be a needed wake-up call.
First of all, he’s terribly overweight, and his father died of a massive heart attack in his fifties. He’s done nothing about it. Secondly, Doug only has a few more months left before retiring from Sunlife Insurance, where he has worked all his life, and has accrued, Nancy guesses, about three years of accumulated sick leave. Nothing has been said to the Company yet, but I’m wondering if this might be the last straw and Nancy putting her foot down (she is, after all, a nurse first and foremost) and telling Doug that’s it. Time to get while the going is good.

I currently hate snow (and weather forecasters)!!
