Labour day weekend.

The concept of Labour Day is thought to have originated in Canada,
starting with events such as the Toronto Trades Assembly’s
"workingman’s demonstration" on April 15, 1872, in support of 24
imprisoned leaders of the Toronto Typographical Union, who had gone on
strike to demand a nine-hour workday. Some 10,000 locals watched the
parade and listened to speeches denouncing laws banning trade unions
(they were soon repealed). (
